One less?

There are something like 500,000 orphaned children in Haiti. That is a HUGE number. Our good friends, Kari and Mike Smith, have accepted the call to make one less child a part of that statistic. Well...technically two less. They have entered into the process of adopting two beautiful brothers, Lookens (age 9) and Kensley (age 8) from Haiti. They are about halfway through the process now but they need a little help. Adoption fees, traveling to see their boys and ultimately bringing the boys home has proven to be a very expensive endeavor. We are asking for YOUR help in a few small ways in order to make a BIG difference for the Smith family.

On August, 20 2011, we are planning to launch a website that will host serveral discounts for various local services and goods (smiliar to groupon or living social). We need people (and businesses) to donate these items for this to be successful. Here's what I'm thinking... you know a landscaper? Ask them if they would be willing to provide one or more homes with full or limited service as a donation to the cause. Find out for us what the going rate would be for that service and we will offer it to the public at a discounted rate with 100% of the proceedes going towards the adoption fund. However many of the service or item is committed to being donated is all we will sell... once it's gone, it's gone. The website will only be up for a few weeks, so shoppers will have to get the deals quick. You can think out of the box for these deals. Know someone who makes handmade items? Ask them to donate a few custom orders. Maybe you have a garden overflowing with produce. Donate a few baskets full of goodies. Gift cards from local eateries, theaters, or music venues would also be a great idea.

Once you get a commitment of something that we can use, you can email the information to alissaclaxton@gmail.com or you can email if you need further information. We thank you in advance for the work and know that you are really providing a great act of service to some really great folks.

Also, be on the lookout for information to come on the house concert at which will will launch the website on August 20. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. Artist lineup and location will be posted here closer to date.
